Dean Burgon Society and the Seven Day Adventist Connection

A famous saying attributed to Confucius is that a journey of  a 1000 miles begins with the first step. The  first step taken by the Dean Burgon Society to promote and defend VPP_KJVonlyism is fraught with half-truths and misinformation.

David Otis Fuller, a founding member of the Dean Burgon Society  edited the book ‘Which Bible’. The book consists of a series of articles written by various authors. However, about  41% of the book contains the work(‘Our Authorized Bible Vindicated’) of one Seven Day Adventist(SDA). Dr Fuller edited the work of the SDA theology professor without telling the reader and passing it off as one from an evangelical Christian. In trying to downplay the religious background of the man, Dr. Fuller wrote in riddles.

“ Benjamin G. Wilkinson, Ph.D., is all but unknown to the world of scholarship, but once his book is carefully considered it will be evident that here is a scholar of the first rank with a thorough knowledge of the subjects about which he wrote. Dr. Wilkinson taught for many years in a small and obscure Eastern college. [Which Bible?, page 174]”

But the truth is that Dr. Benjamin G. Wilkinson Phd, was the Dean of Theology at Washington Missionary College, Washington D.C.  He was head of the theology department of  the Seven Day Adventist training college. The SDA is a cult that teaches amongst other heresies, (a) Sunday observance is the mark of the beast and all who accept it will be lost (b) that Satan, not Christ, ultimately bears the Christian’s sin (c) that Jesus inherited a sinful human nature, and that Jesus’ Divine nature died on the cross; (d) that Ellen G. White was a true “prophetess” of God.

Fuller went on to hide Wilkinson’s (Seven Day Adventist) background by such actions as

(a)  removing footnotes that refers to Ms Ellen White, the SDA “prophetess” who wrote the book “The Great Controversy” (b) leaving out 6 chapters of the original book.

Fig1 shows page 215 of the book “Which Bible” edited by Dr. Fuller. The quotation from Ms Ellen White was not taken out but footnote which referred  to  Ms Ellen White was. The footnote was in the original book.

Fig 2 refers to the unedited version of the book which was hosted in the SDA website http://temcat.com/Wilkinson/authorizedbible2.htm#CHAPTER%202 . The paragraph was left intact by Dr. Fuller but the footnote relating to the cult leader Ms Ellen White was removed so as not to arouse the reader’s suspicion that they are reading cult material.

The unedited footnote of Wilkinson’s book showed that Wilkinson quoted from the cult prophetess. It is footnote 54 and circled in red. The website address is shown below:

7th Day Adventist website introduction to Wilkinson’s defend of his work

Below is the quotation of the website which gives the reasons why the SDA makes use of the KJV bible.

Many in our denomination are "pushing" the use of the New International Version and repressing the use of the King James Version from the pulpits. Since our doctrines, particularly the Investigative Judgment and 2300-Day Prophecy cannot be taught from the NIV, our people should be made aware of the dangers of this Romanized Bible being foisted upon them

Wilkinson defended himself by quoting Ellen White.

“I have the word of Sister White in one of her standard publications on this point:

"Then he closed his eyes in death upon the cross, the soul of Christ did not go to heaven as many believe, or how could His words be true,... ' I am not yet ascended to my Father'? The Spirit of Jesus slept in the tomb with his body, and did not wing its way to Heaven, there to maintain in a separate existence, and to look down upon the mourning disciples embalming the body of which it had taken flight. All that comprised the life and intelligence of Jesus remained with his body in the sepulchre (Emphasis mine); and when he came forth it was as a whole being; he did not have to summon his spirit from Heaven ." Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 3, p. 203. (Old Edition)”
